Intuition
Physics is the science of measurement and prediction: Every physics concept, force, energy, waves, electricity, is defined by how it is measured. Physics equations describe relationships between measurable quantities.
Why it matters: Physics understanding enables you to explain natural phenomena, design engineered systems, and make predictions about physical processes.
The key insight: Dimensional analysis, checking that units match on both sides of an equation, is a powerful tool for catching errors and deriving formulas.
Common Mistakes
Using g = 9.81 vs g = 10 without checking the question: Some questions specify g = 10 m/s² for simplicity. Using 9.81 when the question says 10 gives wrong numerical answers. Always check the value of g specified in the question.
Confusing distance-time graphs with velocity-time graphs: A distance-time graph shows position over time (slope = speed). A velocity-time graph shows velocity over time (slope = acceleration, area = distance). Misidentifying the graph type leads to wrong physical interpretations.
Forgetting to include air resistance in projectile questions: Most projectile motion questions assume no air resistance. If the question mentions air resistance, the standard kinematic equations dont apply. Check whether the question specifies “ignore air resistance”.
